Koran Irvine, 46, a Con Edison worker and Valley Cottage, Rockland County resident who was driving home from work Tuesday evening, was shot and killed on the upper deck of the George Washington Bridge in what investigators believe was a road rage attack — the gunman firing a single shot through Irvine's rear passenger window as both vehicles crossed from New York into New Jersey, then fleeing westbound as police were called to what initially appeared to be a one-car crash.

Port Authority Police responded at approximately 7:18 p.m. Tuesday to reports of a disabled vehicle on the westbound upper level of the GWB after Irvine's blue Volkswagen Golf came to rest against the median barrier near the center of the bridge. Officers found Irvine unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder. He was transported to Englewood Hospital in New Jersey, where he was pronounced dead. Con Edison confirmed Irvine was not on duty at the time of the shooting and issued a statement saying the company was "heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence." Surveillance video reviewed by investigators showed Irvine's Volkswagen nearly colliding with another vehicle near the 179th Street on-ramp — an incident that law enforcement sources said appears to have sparked a confrontation. Both vehicles proceeded westbound onto the bridge. As they crossed the span, someone in the other vehicle fired a single shot that struck Irvine. The shooter's vehicle then fled into New Jersey. No description of the suspect vehicle had been publicly released as of Wednesday morning. No arrests had been announced.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence." — Con Edison statement on the death of Koran Irvine

The GWB shooting shut down the westbound upper level of the bridge for approximately six hours during the evening rush — an enormous disruption to one of the most heavily traveled bridges in the country, which carries approximately 300,000 vehicles daily. All lanes were reopened shortly before 1 a.m. The Port Authority Police Department and NYPD are investigating jointly, with surveillance footage from the bridge's extensive camera infrastructure being reviewed frame by frame to identify the shooter's vehicle and provide a description for public release. The FBI — which has jurisdiction over major bridge infrastructure in the New York area — had not announced involvement as of Wednesday morning, though the federal nexus of the George Washington Bridge as an interstate thoroughfare makes its potential involvement possible depending on how the investigation develops.

Road rage shooting incidents on major New York metropolitan area highways have drawn significant attention in recent years, with state and federal officials repeatedly calling for expanded law enforcement presence and camera coverage on the region's bridge and tunnel crossings. The George Washington Bridge, connecting Fort Lee, New Jersey, to upper Manhattan, operates under Port Authority of New York and New Jersey jurisdiction — a bi-state agency that manages bridge and tunnel security with its own police force. The bridge is extensively covered by surveillance cameras, which investigators are confident will produce an identification of the suspect vehicle.

The George Washington Bridge carries approximately 300,000 vehicles daily across two decks, making it the world's busiest motor vehicle bridge. Con Edison is New York City and Westchester County's primary electric and gas utility, employing approximately 14,000 workers. Koran Irvine is survived by family members whose names were not publicly released. A suspect description and vehicle information had not been released by Port Authority Police as of Wednesday morning. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Port Authority Police Department's tipline.

Koran Irvine was driving home. He was 46 years old, a man whose utility company described him as part of their family, who had spent Tuesday doing his job keeping New York City's lights on. His death is attributable to one thing: someone was carrying a gun in a car on the George Washington Bridge and chose to use it because another driver cut too close in traffic. The GWB's surveillance infrastructure will almost certainly identify the vehicle. The investigation will move quickly. And when an arrest is made, the charge should reflect what actually happened on that bridge on Tuesday night — a man was murdered over a near-miss in traffic.
